PR and AI search: how brands get cited in AI answers

The short answer

AI answers tend to draw on pages that state a clear answer, come from sources that look credible and are backed up elsewhere. For a brand that means clear owned pages, consistent facts, honest structured data and coverage from reputable third parties. No one can guarantee inclusion.

What AI answers do with the web

AI features in search and chat assistants summarise information from web pages and link to sources. Google's own guidance for site owners says the same fundamentals that apply to search apply here: pages need to be crawlable, indexable and eligible to show a snippet, and there is no special markup that guarantees inclusion.

Seven things that help

  1. 1

    Put the answer first

Open each page with a short, direct answer to the question it targets, then explain. Clear headings and short paragraphs make a page easier to quote.

  2. 2

Say who you are, the same way everywhere

Use one name, address, description and set of profile links across your site and profiles. Consistency helps systems recognise you as one entity.

  3. 3

    Earn corroboration

Coverage and mentions from reputable third parties give search and AI systems more than your own claims to work with. This is where PR does its work.

  4. 4

    Date and update your pages

Show when a page was last reviewed and keep facts current. Stale pages lose out to fresher ones.

  5. 5

    Use structured data honestly

Add schema that matches the visible content, such as Organization, Article, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList. Never mark up things the page does not show.

  6. 6

Do not block the crawlers you want

Check robots rules and the pages you want found. Allow the search and AI crawlers you are happy to be cited by.

  7. 7

    Measure by looking

Search your brand and key questions regularly in the assistants your customers use, note what is cited and fix gaps. Tools exist, but a monthly manual check is a sound start.

What to avoid

  • Fake reviews, invented statistics or pages written only to be quoted.
  • Hidden text or markup that does not match the page.
  • Claiming to be independent when you own what you review. Disclose it.
  • Promising clients a guaranteed place in AI answers.

A note on llms.txt

An llms.txt file is a plain text summary of a site for language models. There is no evidence that major engines require it, and it is cheap to publish, so this site has one. Treat it as optional, not as a switch.

Questions

How do I get into Google's AI Overviews?

There is no guarantee and no special markup. Google says pages should be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and that the usual helpful, original content principles apply. Clear answers, credible sources and corroboration help.

Does PR help me appear in AI answers?

It can. Coverage from reputable outlets gives search and AI systems independent evidence about you. The effect varies and cannot be guaranteed.

Do I need llms.txt?

No. It is optional and there is no evidence major engines require it. It costs little to publish and is harmless.
